Banagher is Situated in the very far west of County Offaly, about 25 miles south of Athlone. The town consists of a long street of tidy late–Georgian houses running right up the river, where a sweeping bridge links Offaly with Galway. The bridge is fortified on the West side by a Martello tower, a small circular fort built to stave off the threat of invasion by the French forces in the Napoleonic Wars.
Pat's Olde Bar: "Sink a few pints" and enjoy the 'craic' at Pat's Olde Bar in the Brosna Lodge". Enjoy a drink in the old world charm, snuggled up at one of the open fires at Pat's Olde Bar. Browse through our wine list, our just settle for a pint of creamy Guinness. Live music and traditional sessions are a specialty at the weekend. If you're hungry after your travels, ask for our Bar food menu. The menu changes on a daily basis, but you can be sure to find something to suit just your pallette.
The Fields Restaurant: "The Fields Restaurant" is renowned for its quality food, using fresh local produce superbly presented and served with a special attention to detail. So when you've seen enough of the River, caught enough trout, played your 18 holes and done everything else that the area has to offer, stop in at The Fields and discover why it's so popular. We offer the ideal setting for small weddings and conferences. 'The Fields' will also hold private parties of up to 50 people.
Fishing: The Banagher Coarse Angling Festival is held annually at a number of well–known hot spots, usually in May and in September. Probably the best spot for fishing in Banagher is located downstream of Banagher, on the east bank of the River. The Town Stretch, as it is called, is one of the Match Angling Stretches used for the Banagher Festival. The Town Stretch is a good place for mixed fishing, so don't be surprised if you find yourself catching over 40 lbs at one sitting – more if you can get into a shoal of bream on a calm day with little boat traffic.
Clonmacnoise: A famous religious place visited by Pope John Paul in 1979, Clonmacnoise is held in high esteem by historians and tourists alike. It was once a world famous place of learning and worship until invaded and plundered repeatedly by the Vikings in the 10th and 11th centuries. Clonmacnoise is now the site of several archaeological digs, a heritage centre, a cemetery with roots in the 12th century, several fairy rings, and one of the nicest summer sunsets in the world.
The Athlone Chamber: About 20 miles north of Banagher and also on the Shannon, Athlone is a town with great history, including several famous battles fought in and around the castle on the Connaught side, a powerful symbol of the way tradition and the 'boom' lifestyle coexist in the town.
