The Westport Woods Hotel & Spa is located in the delightful, bustling town of Westport, Co.Mayo, an ideal centre for touring the West of Ireland. Directions From Castlebar (this is also the road from Dublin) c.18km. Take the N5 which brings you directly to Westport. As you come into town, cross the bridge and go straight up Bridge Street (one way system applies). At the top of Bridge Street turn right on to Shop Street. Follow this road as it swings first left and then right at The Octagon (town square with a statue of St. Patrick in the centre). Stay on this road for 1.5km. The Westport Woods Hotel & Spa is on the right hand side before The Quay. From Leenane (this is also the road from Connemara) c. 32km Take the N59 which brings you directly to Westport. At the T–junction turn left. The Westport Woods Hotel & Spa is about .5km on the right hand side before The Quay From Ballinrobe (this is also the road from Galway) c. 27km Take the N84 towards Castlebar. At Partry (c.12km) turn left on to the R330 heading towards Westport. This road brings you directly to Westport. As you come into the town stay on the same road which swings left onto Mill Street. At the end of Mill Street the road swings right on to Shop Street (there is a large clock in the middle of the road). Follow the road as it swings first left and then right at The Octagon (town square with a statue of St. Patrick in the centre). Stay on this road for 1.5km. Clew Bay Golf Club, 9 hole Course A particularly attractive golf course located, as the name suggests, on the shores of Clew Bay. Equestrian Breaks Hunting During the autumn and winter months, the Westport Woods Hotel & Spa offers specialist hunting holidays for the experienced rider. Quality mounts are provided and hunting is available with both the Galway Blazers and Sligo Harriers. Full board plus transport to and from meets is included. Please note that a good standard of riding is essential. Trekking During the summer months trekking and trail riding is available at the hotel. For the period of your stay you will have your own well mannered, experienced horse or pony (for example the native Connemara). Each day you will go on a different trail ride over a variety of terrain ranging from long, deserted sandy beaches to mountain tracks. A packed lunch and transport will also be provided. Each evening you will return to the hotel from either trail riding or hunting to enjoy a welcome swim, sauna or jacuzzi followed by a gourmet dinner. Other Local Activities/Attractions Walking Mayo offers a wonderful variety of short walks, hill walks and way– marked trails. The terrain varies from level, easy going, to tough mountain climbing where specialist equipment is essential. Whatever you choose, the scenery is unfailingly stupendous and walks are almost always uncrowded. Fishing Mayo has traditionally been famous for the quality and diversity of the fishing in sea, lake and river. Salmon, trout and coarse fishing, shore fishing and deep sea angling are all widely available to the enthusiast. Boats, ghillies and equipment can be booked locally. Licences (available locally) are essential for trout and salmon fishing. Cycling Mayo provides a good choice of cycling terrain. There is one signposted route, The Humbert Route, which runs from Kilcummin, near Ballina in North Mayo through the lakes and hills to Charlestown where it crosses into Co. Sligo. The route then continues through Sligo and Leitrim to finish in Ballinamuck, Co. Longford. Beaches Mayo's 10 Blue Flag beaches at Carrowmore Strand, Dooega, Dugort, Elly Bay, Golden Strand, Keel, Keem, Mullagharoe, Mulranny, and Ross Strand are clean, safe, sandy and easy to access. Water sports are widely available with particularly good surfing and diving conditions. In addition, dotted along the coastline are a number of adventure centres. Islands Islands are always very special places, with fascinating histories and tantalising hidden nooks and crannies. Mayo's islands are no exception and are ruggedly beautiful. Clew Bay is said to have an island for every day of the year and ferries run regularly to the larger off–shore islands of Inishturk and Clare Island. Achill, Irelands largest island is connected to the mainland by a bridge. The Mullet Peninsula has some gorgeous, uninhabited off–shore islands which are important wildlife sanctuaries. There are no regular ferries but boats can be hired locally.
