Sligo Hotels & Information

County Sligo is located in the Northwest of the country, bordered by Leitrim to the east and Roscommon and Mayo to the south and west.

The landscape of the county is rich and varied, from majestic mountains to beautiful beaches and lakes. The country inspired the poet W.B.Yeats and also his brother Jack B.Yeats, the artist. The area around Sligo town is known as Yeats Country. The Yeats family spent their summers in Rosses Point and The Sligo museum houses a vast collection of memorabilia from the family. W.B.Yeats is buried at Drumcliff Churchyard, in the shadow of Benbulben Mountain.

The lakes of Sligo, with their still waters and wooded islands, are truly spectacular, and form a striking contrast to the county's rugged uplands.

The imposing Neolithic cairn on the summit of Knocknarae, known locally as Queen Maeve's grave, is a striking landmark. At Carrowmore is the largest Megalithic cemetery in Ireland.

Sligo boasts some excellent surfing beaches, including Strandhill, Rosses Point and Enniscrone.

Lissadell House, once home to Countess Markievicz, is a good family attraction, with a lovely beach nearby. The area is also popular for its scenic golf courses.

Sligo town is the capital of the county and a busy market town on the River Garavogue. It is an attractive town with good bars and restaurants, theatres and art galleries. Sligo is the largest town in the northwest, with a heritage going back 6,000 years. Its name literally translates as 'the place of shells'. Sligo town makes a good base for a range of activities - horse riding, golfing, and walking, cycling, fishing and water sports.
