Monaghan Hotels & Information
Monaghan is situated in the northeast of Ireland, bordered to the south by Louth, Meath and Cavan and to the north by Fermanagh, Tyrone and Armagh. The countryside is quite like its neighbour, Cavan, with rolling hills and lakes, making it the perfect destination for angling, hiking and golfing.
Monaghan has a great artistic and cultural heritage. The renowned Irish poet, Patrick Kavanagh was born in the village of Iniskeen and he drew much of his inspiration from the Monaghan countryside. There are many Bronze Age megalithic sites and pre-historic remains such as the Tullyrain Ring Fort near Shantonagh in the south of the county. Monaghan is the traditional centre for lace-making, with Clones and Carrickmacross being well-known for this and other traditional crafts.
