Leitrim, or 'Lovely Leitrim' as it is commonly known, is located just south of Donegal Bay, with Fermanagh and Cavan to the east, Longford to the south and Roscommon and Sligo to the west.
This county boasts the shortest coastline of a "coastal county" in the country with just five kilometers at Tulloghan, but it does have a beach of another kind - the sandy shore on the northern edge of Lough Allen.
County Leitrim has beautiful countryside, with mountains, lakes, rivers, pastures and extensive boglands. The county is almost divided in two by Lough Allen. There are also numerous sites of archaelogical interest, from ring forts to restored manor houses. Leitrim had one of the lowest population densities in Ireland and there is plenty of unspoilt rural scenery.
The Shannon-Erne Waterway The Shannon-Erne Waterway, stretching for 240 kms, is a series of lakes and rivers linked by canal, from the River Shannon at Leitrim, through Cavan and into Lough Erne in Fermanagh. This has been fully restored and visitors can enjoy the Victorian splendour of the canal with its many bridges and locks.
Carrick-on-Shannon The pretty county town of Carrick-on-Shannon is the perfect location for a water-based holiday. There is a thriving tourist industry here, due in no small part to its proximity to the River Shannon. The town has a colourful modern marina, which has berths for private launches and also offers boats for hire. It's a small, but surprisingly cosmopolitan town, and is a great base for taking part in other activities in Country Leitrim.
Apart from river cruising, there is horse-riding, hill-walking, fishing and golfing. There are a large number of local painters, sculptors and craft artists in the area and The Leitrim Design House offers a permanent showcase for local artists and craftspeople at the Market House Centre. Costello Chapel on Bridge Street was built in 1877 and is the smallest of its kind in the world.
