About Fort Royal Country House
Fort Royal Country House is a 11 bedroom country house hotel on the edge of Lough Swilly, just out side the village of Rathmullan, in North Donegal. Fort Royal has been run by the same family since it opened as a hotel 1948, and although many improvements have been made since, the same principles in hospitality are still used today.
The hotelis situated in 18 privately owned acres of mature trees, gardens and lawns of which the front one leads right down to the beach. Fort Royal is also renowned for its award winning cuisine, friendly regular staff, comfortable bedrooms and lounges, and a very special home from home atmosphere. It is the perfect place to escape to for peace and tranquility, or as a base to explore the fascinating county of Donegal.
For the more energetic guest, the guesthouse has its own 9 hole pitch and putt course and hard tennis court, both overlooking the sea. If you prefer something more gentle how about a stroll along the beach or simply reading a good book in front of one of the guesthouse log fires.
Fort Royal Country House Rooms
The hotel has 11 well appointed bedrooms all with en–suite bathrooms and all but three have a view of the sea. They are all furnished to a level of comfort and taste as befitting a guesthouse.
Five of the bedrooms are classed as superior, purely because they are slightly larger in size than the standard rooms.

On the ground floor of the hotel are two lounges and all with comfortable armchairs and log burning fires. The dining room is also on the ground floor.
The hotel has very good reputation for its fine cuisine, with the table d'hote dinner menu changing daily, depending on what raw ingredients are available and in season. Dinner must be reserved by 12.00 noon on the day in advance.
As you might expect with the seaside location, there is a daily supply of fresh fish, which when cooked simply is one of the highlights of the menu. There are also locally caught lobsters, scallops and mussels available throughout most of our season. The hotel uses two award winning butchers from the nearby area, for the supply of all the meats, including Donegal Lamb. Fresh vegetables, fruit and herbs are brought in from the guesthouse's walled kitchen garden on a daily basis.
The hotel has one red rosette from the AA which is a good benchmark as to the high standards of consistency the kitchen works to. The dining room is closed at lunchtime , but snacks are served in the lounge.
