Swords Hotels & InformationSwords dates back to 560 AD when it was founded by St. Colmcille. Legend has it that the saint blessed the local well, thus giving it its name, 'Sord' meaning clear or pure. You can still see the well today as you walk from Main Street to Chapel Lane where Saint. Colmcille's monastic settlement still survives today. The church has a 9th Century Round Tower and 13th Century Mediaeval Square or Norman Tower. Swords Castle, at the North end of Main Street dates back to the 12th century. It is the former home of the Arch Bishop of Dublin and is unusually large for an Irish castle. The perimeter walls measure 305 metres in length. Today it is being renovated by the Parks Department of Fingal County Council and it will become a major cultural, educational and tourist centre.
