Grand Canal Strret Hotels & Information

Grand Canal Street, named after the Grand Canal that opened in 1791 but previous to 1792 was Artichoke Road. In 1736 John Villiboise obtained a lease on land here where he erected a house and in the garden grew artichokes. The local inhabitants came to know it as "the artichoke" and eventually this name came to be applied to the road also.
