Newmarket-on-Fergus is situated about halfway between Limerick and Ennis, and near to Shannon Town and airport. As its name implies, it lies on the River Fergus. The main N18 Limerick?Ennis road passed through Newmarket until the town was bypassed in 2003. Neighbouring towns and villages include Clarecastle, Cratloe, Sixmilebridge, Quin and Shannon. Its population was given in the 2006 census as 1,542. The hinterland around Newmarket-on-Fergus is relatively densely populated by Irish standards due to the proximity of the large industrial area at Shannon. There are many housing estates here.
